Today’s report will be slightly different as we have received feedback that you guys would like to see photos of baits/colors that have been hot. We will do our best to post links to the colors and if the mods do not approve, please reach out and we will do our best to go a different route to post photos, but this way will be the most time efficient for us.
From Wednesday until early this morning, the crappie fishing has been EXCELLENT. If you all go back to our reports last year about this time (as the water was lowered in Berlin), you would see that the spot on Greenbower/Rockhill (the mouth of the Mahoning) was on fire for 3-4 weeks depending on who you asked. It’s that time again. Primarily, it is a jig bite, tipped with maggots. Almost all of our reports are coming on Panfish Assassins and Maggots with some small minnows and small slip bobbers being used on a second rod. If you have a kayak, it’s even better. We have had customers taking out limits all week with those on a kayak being a bit faster.
Here are the hot baits/colors producing the most fish:
Walleye have been improving as the colder mornings have helped stimulate fish activity. Early morning fishing and late night has been better, but anglers have picked up fish trolling as well, with the fish are just above the thermocline.
Early mornings have been better with gold crawler harnesses and daytime has been more of a trolling bite on Flicker Minnows #9/#11 and select #5 jointed Flicker Shads in various colors-the darker the better (these have picked up more crappie than anything but walleye have been mixed in).
Catfish are being caught almost everywhere, but we are hearing Shrimp is the best method and you will pick up some Hybrid Striped Bass along with them. To give you an idea on how hot shrimp is, we sold 12# in 2 days in one our “Classified” flavor 2 days after its release on the bait menu! To put that into perspective, we bought 30# of shrimp to last us a year. Definitely try this flavor as it was even outfishing nightcrawlers fished right alongside it. Most of the catfish we are hearing of are being caught at Deer Creek near or on the pier, but they have been mixed in all over the place.
If you are fishing from shore, 3″ Mister Twister curly tailed grubs were catching quite a few smallmouth in the Mahoning River by anglers on kayaks and flat bottomed boats, as well as anglers wading below the Berlin spillway. Whopper Ploppers caught a bunch of smallmouth in this same area (see the photos below)
For Walborn and Berlin, look for fish near structure. Smallmouth have been caught near the rockbeds in and around the railroad trestle, with largemouth being caught near weedbeds in the mornings and later in the afternoons. Bandito Bugs by Googan baits have been by far the number one hot bait this week in soft plastics, primarily fished Texas Rigged.
Hopefully you guys appreciate the links to the colors and it makes it easier if you are unfamiliar with the baits we are talking about. We appreciate your feedback and want to make the report as easy as possible so you all can spend more time fishing.
Enjoy your Holiday Weekend! Should be really good fishing!
